DESIGN WEEK AT THE DESIGN EXCHANGE (DX), JANUARY 23-29 Toronto, Canada (January 19, 2012) As part of Toronto's Design Week 2012, the Design Exchange is proud to offer a variety of programming for the city-wide design experience, taking place January 23-29 at the DX, 234 Bay Street. DX events will include a screening of co-director Ben Murray's Unfinished Spaces, exhibition launch of Stephen Burks' Man Made Toronto, panel discussion of The Evolving Visual Consumer, relaunch of the renowned DX Resource Centre and more. Design Week is one of the DX's most anticipated annual attractions and raises awareness about designers and the best in new design practices. "The city of Toronto's ongoing commitment to the advancement of the design community helps make it a stimulating place to live," says Tim Gilbert, acting president and chair, Design Exchange. "The Design Exchange is pleased to be an integral part of Toronto's annual Design Week." DESIGN WEEK HIGHLIGHTS Film Screening: Unfinished Spaces Design Week at the DX will launch with the Canadian premiere of Unfinished Spaces on January 19 from 6:30-9PM. Set in the 1960's, the film chronicles three young, visionary architects commissioned by Fidel Castro and Che Guevara to create Cuba's National Art Schools. Making It! is a dynamic, multiple speaker presentation taking place January 25 from 6:30-8PM. Twenty 'makers' from various design disciplines will each have five minutes to walk through a single project from conception to presentation. Admission pay what you can (recommended admission $10). Stephen Burks: Man Made Toronto The exhibition for Stephen Burks: Man Made Toronto will run from January 23 - April 1, 2012. Presented by Wedge Curatorial Projects in conjunction with the Studio Museum in Harlem, this unique project showcases industrial designer Stephen Burks' exploration of the global economy and artisan craft. The exhibition encourages consideration of both the conceptual and aesthetic value of a handmade object, and places importance on the celebration of traditional skills, techniques and cultures. (Opening reception takes place January 27 from 6-9PM). Admission suggested admission of $10 for the exhibition and opening reception. Media can RSVP for the opening reception at rsvp@dx.org. Panel Discussion: The Evolving Visual Consumer Series The Evolving Visual Consumer, a panel discussion by RGD Ontario and the DX, will take place January 31 from 6:30-8:30PM. The conversation will focus on how the experience and consumption of media is transformative. Panelists include: Moderator Yen Chu R.G.D., Creative Director, Parcel Design; John Furneaux R.G.D., Managing Partner, Ove Design; Adrian Norris, Managing Editor, Presentation and Design, The Globe and Mail; Mikey Richardson R.G.D., Creative Director & Partner, AmoebaCorp; and Bev Forster, Creative Director, BMO Financial Group. Daily Tours The DX will relaunch the Resource Centre, which houses a collection of over 450 significant pieces of Canadian design spanning over six decades.
